 Italian Spinone

The Spinone is a muscular dog with powerful bones. They are vigorous and robust, his purpose as a hardworking gun dog is evident. Their gentle disposition and docile temperament make them an excellent family companion as well.

Jack Russell

The Jack Russell Terrier is bold and friendly, athletic and clever. At home he is playful, exuberant and overwhelmingly affectionate. He is an independent and energetic terrier and requires his due portion of attention.

Japanese Akita

The Akita is a powerfully built dog originally developed to hunt bears in Japan. The Japanese now use the Akita as a guard dog and police dog. 

Keeshound

The Keeshond (KAZE-hond) is a happy dog by nature. They are extremely affectionate. When a Keeshond joins the family, he looks forward to being an important part of it. He loves children and will gladly play games and bounce around with them. 

Kerry Blue Terrier

The hardworking Kerry Blue has been used to hunt on land and water, to guard homes and farms, to kill rodents, and even to herd and drive sheep and cattle. He has also been used in England as a police dog, for trailing and guarding.

Labrador

The beloved Labrador Retriever is playful, loving to people and hardworking. The Lab can be counted on as a true friend anytime, anyplace, and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.

Lakeland Terrier

The Lakeland Terrier is frisky, feisty, and fun. He is a smart little dog who loves to be the center of his owner's life. A person who understands this vivacious personality can have a lot of fun with a Lakeland. He's got the energy and interest to play with kids tirelessly.

Lhaso Apso

 Lhasas don't expect to be pampered. They are protective of their people and care for them in a dignified but loving manner. In obedience training, positive, repetitive lessons will win the Lhasa over. The Lhasa can be playful and spirited, but also independent.

Maltese

The Maltese becomes attached to the whole family and enjoys the company of well-behaved visitors, as well as other animals. He's got a lot of sparkle in his personality. He likes to be treated like the adorable baby of the family, but will happily respect commonsense rules

Mastiff

The Mastiff is a gentle friend to man by nature, always serving as man's watchdog and loyal companion. This is a dog who likes being around people. He needs their company and bonds close with his family. Because of his size, he needs room to move. He is best suited for life in the country or suburbs.

Newfoundland

Most important in Newfoundlands is their temperament. Their kindly expression is calm, patient and dignified. They need human companionship to be happy. They love children. Because of their size, Newfs need room to move, and love a place to swim.

Norfolk

Norfolks are known for their spunky, sparky personalities. They may be small, but they have endless energy and love to romp and play with children. They are outgoing and inquisitive. Being part of the family makes them happiest, and they get along nicely with all family members, including other dogs.

Norwich Terrier

Quick, sharp, and ever-moving, the Norwich loves his daily exercise. He likes to be in the thick of the action. What is happening, who is here, where everybody's going--these are the concerns of the Norwich. Fond of children, the Norwich makes a loyal, affectionate companion.

Old English Sheepdog

In today's families, the Old English Sheepdog is a big, lovable companion. He likes to be with his family and get plenty of exercise every day. Although the Old English Sheepdog's abundant coat might seem a problem in hot weather, it's an effective insulator in both hot and cold.

Papillion

Papillon means "butterfly" in French. That's the name of this little dog because his winglike ears resemble a beautiful butterfly. He prefers to cuddle with his owner, to whom he becomes affectionately attached for life. He likes to play with toys inside and is a hardy outdoor sport--perfect for city and country dwellers alike. The Papillon is highly trainable.

Pekingese

The Pekingese gets his name from the ancient city of Peking, now called Beijing. Chinese legend has it that the breed is the offspring of a lion and a monkey. Because of their thick undercoats, Pekes need at least an hourly brushing session per week.

Pointer

The Pointer knows how to do his job and takes pride in doing it well. His short, smooth coat shows off his handsome outline. He is sleek, muscular, and ready for action. The Pointer is an independent dog who likes to compete. His concentration is intense. He has strength, courage, and great dignity, but he is also a sweet companion and gentle with children.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a little spark plug. He's lively, bold and inquisitive, too. This makes him an excellent and fearless watchdog despite his tiny size. He's smart and will respond well to consistent training. Poms are sometimes suspicious of strangers and other animals.

Poodle

There are three sizes of Poodles--Standard, Miniature, and Toy. They are alike in every way except for size. All Poodles originated from the Standard Poodle. Poodles are smart, loyal, proud and fun. They seem to understand the moods of their special friends. They enjoy the challenges of obedience training, which gives these intelligent dogs great happiness. Politely reserved around strangers, they can also have a playful sense of humor.

Pug

When the Pug looks at you and cocks his head, even the hardest heart has to melt. Pugs combine a cocky confidence with a friendly, sensitive nature. They are great with kids and thoroughly relish playtime and exercise.

Pyrenean Mountain Dog

Because of his size, the Pyrenean is a lot of dog to handle, and needs plenty of space at home. Usually he is calm and serious. He forms deep, loving attachments to his family that last a lifetime. Sometimes he chooses one person as his special friend. To strangers, he can seem independent.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Ridgeback was bred to hunt game, but also to guard homes and protect families. This is a strong dog, but one who wants to please. He is proud, dignified, and courageous, devoted to his family, and protective and loving of children.

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is both a bold guardian and an intelligent, steady friend. But he is rather aloof, owing to his history as a hardworking drover and guardian. With his owner, though, he aims to accompany and guard with all his heart. He loves exercise and will thrill to the challenges of any outdoor sports that include dog and owner.

St. Bernard

For hundreds of years, Saint Bernards have been renowned for their bravery in rescue work, saving thousands of lives in the treacherous mountains of the Alps between Switzerland and Italy. At the same time, Saint Bernards have been just as well known for their big, loving personalities.

Samoyed

Samoyeds are perky, dependable playmates, often wearing "smiles" on their faces. They are full of fun, and love nothing more than an afternoon of frisky activity in the snow. They are active and alert, indoors and out.

Schnauzer Giant

The Giant Schnauzer's main occupation today is as a police dog. He is a bold, strong, smart dog who does best with a serious, experienced, and confident owner. With solid obedience training, he will reward you with loyalty and obedience.

Scottish Terrier

The Scottie is a playful puppy who grows into a dignified adult. He is likely to become attached to one person and lead a life of quiet dignity dedicated to that companion. Despite his sometime reserved nature, the Scottie remains a true terrier.

Sealyham Terrier

Sealyhams like to be around people and have a charming sense of humor. They are able performers in obedience training, often putting their own "spin" on tricks. Sealyhams are quiet and relaxed in the house, though they do need daily walks and romps. Sealyhams also are reliable

Shetland Sheepdog

Because of his small size, the beautiful Sheltie can be happy in the city or the country. These intelligent, loving, and sensitive dogs become deeply attached to their families. Shelties are famous for their learning ability. Besides being smart, they want to please. Training is a pleasure; a light hand is all that is required. They usually get along well with gentle and thoughtful children.

Shih Tzu

The silky Shih Tzu is sweet and playful. He's also got plenty of spunk. He's not afraid to stand up for himself, though he usually gets along nicely with strangers and other animals. The Shih Tzu seems especially to dislike hot weather. The coat of the Shih Tzu needs daily grooming.

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is an outgoing, fun-loving dog. He is lighter in build than the Alaskan Malamute, and also less bold. But he still requires an alert owner who stays in control, as the Siberian's nature is to roam and explore, as his Arctic ancestors did.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier enjoys games, especially with children. Most take pleasure in meeting strangers, whether people or other animals. He will greet friends with great joy, and loves to go places with the family. The Wheaten is a quick learner, with a steady mind, and likes plenty of exercise every day.

Tibetan terrier

The Tibetan Terrier has always been a companion dog. That's probably why to this day the Tibetan Terrier enjoys people so much. He is a happy, outgoing dog. They are extremely agile. They can use their paws like cats to wash, catch, hold and even bat at tennis balls. They are usually quiet and when they do bark, it starts out low and rises to a high pitch

Weimeraner

The Weimaraner is a bold dog. They are smart and their busy minds thrive on activity. They are strong and determined, needing time, space, and attention. If you want the challenges of keeping ahead of the fearless "gray ghost", and your daily activities can include your dog, you may be suited to the Weimaraner. He loves kids and is used to being a member of a family.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an eager and quick learner, extremely affectionate, and devoted. He is smaller than the English Springer, but stronger than the Cocker Spaniel. All Welshies are distinguished by their beautiful coats -- always red with white.

Welsh Terrier

The Welsh Terrier is a zippy little companion, always looking for action and entertainment. He loves to splash in the water and go for long country runs. Welsh Terriers are lovable buddies, and unlike some terriers, are surprisingly well mannered with other dogs.

West Highland Terrier

With his bristly white face and dark sparkling eyes, the Westie makes a smart, proud, spunky, and hearty companion. Outdoors he is a speedy and skillful hunter; indoors he is an affectionate and devoted companion. Owners will especially appreciate a typical Westie mischievousness. The Westie loves people. With other animals he is generally friendly, but can get scrappy if not supervised. He will alert his family to visitors.

Whippet

Whippets are the fastest domestic animals of their size. They can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. But they are also quiet and well-behaved in the house. They are smart, loving, hardy little dogs who can live in the city.

Yorkshire Terrier

Because they're so tiny and have such splendid coats, many people think Yorkshire Terriers are delicate dogs. Actually, it's better not to baby these dogs too much. Excessive pampering confuses them. Common sense care must be taken because of their size, but Yorkies are little terriers. That means they love to play and investigate. They are bundles of energy as puppies, though older Yorkies can be quiet and settled.
